The US Department of Defense acknowledged that a test it conducted Thursday as part of developing its hypersonic weapons program failed due to a technical glitch.

In a statement published by Defense News, Pentagon spokesman Timothy Gorman confirmed the authenticity of the news that a missile had failed to launch during the test carried out at the “Kadiak” space airport in Alaska, noting that the missile managed to climb above the ground and then fell.

The statement explained that the reason for the failure was due to the failure of a missile engine that is not part of the hypersonic weapons program, noting that an investigation was launched to uncover the circumstances of the accident to prevent its recurrence in the future.

The Pentagon stressed that the development of hypersonic weapons remains among the Pentagon’s top priorities, expressing the US Department of Defense’s conviction that it will be able to begin building “hypersonic offensive capabilities” from the early 1920s.

The US military had previously acknowledged the failure of the first and second tests of the air-launched hypersonic missile (ARRW) last April and July.

This failure comes against the backdrop of news that China tested twice last summer hypersonic weapons that “astonished” the Pentagon and US intelligence, according to the Financial Times newspaper.
