Passengers arriving from South Africa were detained for several hours for checks

A mutant of the new Corona virus, Omicron, was discovered in 13 people who arrived in the Dutch capital, Amsterdam, on two flights from South Africa.

These people were among 61 passengers who tested positive for the coronavirus.

It comes as stricter restrictions come into force in the Netherlands, amid rising COVID-19 cases and concerns about the new mutation.

Restrictions include early closure of hospitality (such as bars and restaurants) and cultural destinations. There are also restrictions on home gatherings.
