Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Sheikh of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif affirmed that the Holy Qur’an’s hadith about polygamy did not come in an absolute ruling without restriction, but rather came in the context of a Qur’anic verse that defends orphans from the injustice they may be subjected to from their guardian, pointing out that this matter leads to invoking the injustice that has suffered the first wife after a plurality, if justice condition is not available, pointing to the words of the Almighty: «If you fear not justly with the orphans Vankhawwa what women of your choice, two or three or four, the interpretation of the meaning or proprietary that slave women » (An-Nisa: 3).

The Sheikh of Al-Azhar added in a video of him, that it is necessary to know and understand that this verse is not an independent verse, and no verse was revealed to direct society to polygamy, just as verses were revealed that carry orders directed to people to do this.

Al-Tayyib indicated that there is no independent verse that was revealed telling people to marry or enumerate wives to four, because this is a wrong understanding, and it is unfortunate that it is inferred at the present time, adding: “We kept silent about explaining this verse until it became as if it were independent. They married to four, although this is not the case.”

The Sheikh of Al-Azhar pointed out that dealing with the polygamy license is not a new matter, because it is in the heritage and was decided by scholars. However, dirt has been placed on this heritage, and another understanding has spread that has caused the tragedies that are spreading today, which prompted some to accuse Islam that it was it that opened the door to polygamy. Although Islam came to put an end to the chaos of polygamy that existed in society before its advent, after the matter was absolute.

Polygamy Conditions

Sheikh Al-Tayeb explained that a man who wants polygamy, which is considered a natural right for a man in some cases, should not oppress his first wife while being keen to obtain the same respect that she was accustomed to before marrying the second, in addition to the fact that she may request a divorce for the harm, in the event that she did not It accepts life with another wife, and it is not permissible for the husband to lock her up, stressing the necessity of adhering to justice between wives in all matters, such as displaying the face, cohabitation, sleeping in, and material matters. God is strong.

The Almighty said: “And do not think that God is unaware of what the wrongdoers do. He only delays them for a day in which He is distinguished” (Al-Ibra: 42).
