South Africa: The new mutation may be the most contagious, but the travel ban is unjustified

The General Authority of Civil Aviation and the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority announced the suspension of entry for travelers from South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Mozambique on all flights of national and foreign carriers, as well as transit passengers coming from them, as of Monday, November 29.

This includes, as reported by the official Emirati “WAM” agency, “suspending the entry of travelers who were in these countries during the 14-day period before coming to the UAE with the continuation of flights, as it will allow the transfer of passengers from the UAE to these countries.”

The agency added, “It will allow the transfer of excluded groups from South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Mozambique to the UAE with the application of precautionary measures, which include official delegations and UAE nationals, diplomatic missions accredited between the UAE and these countries and owners of golden residence.”

“Wam” clarified that “it requires citizens of the country, diplomatic missions and owners of golden residency to adhere to a 10-day quarantine and to conduct an examination on the ninth day of entering the country, while official delegations must wait until the result appears and then complete their official duties in the country without the need for stone.”

The General Authority of Civil Aviation confirmed that travelers from South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Mozambique through other countries are required to have a period of stay in those countries of not less than 14 days in order to be allowed to enter the country.

It also prevents UAE nationals from traveling to South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Mozambique, with the exception of official state delegations, emergency medical cases, and study missions.

This comes against the background of monitoring the rapid spread of the new “B.1.1.529” strain, which raised widespread fears in the world and resulted in a number of countries stopping flights with South Africa.

This copy carries twice the number of mutations in the “delta” strain, among which are associated with avoiding the immune response resulting from both previous infection and vaccination, as well as mutations associated with increased infection.

On Friday, the World Health Organization classified the new strain as “alarming”, the fifth version to be placed in this classification.
