Former US ambassador to Israel David Friedman has said that Tel Aviv should not rely on Washington when it comes to Iran, at a time when Israeli officials have stepped up their rhetoric against Tehran.
“At the moment, I think that Israel should not rely on America, which has the same views as Israel,” Friedman, who served as former US President Donald Trump’s envoy to Israel, said in an interview broadcast by Israel’s Channel 12. Not in politics.
He explained that “Trump does not want to enter into a war with Iran, and that his administration’s strategy against Iran was to crush the regime with sanctions. I think he would have succeeded if his administration had remained,” noting that “the Iranian strategy by 2019 was to wait for the US elections 2020 and hope for the best.”
He added, “The Iranians were of the opinion that if Biden wins, he is keen to return to the nuclear deal.. They made a bet, and unfortunately, they won.”
Friedman declined to say whether the Trump administration had prepared for military action against Iran, saying: “What I can say is that all options have been considered.”
