Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the periodic Western sanctions adopted on December 2 against Belarus are as illegitimate as any restrictions imposed by circumventing the UN Security Council.
Condemning these sanctions, which were imposed simultaneously by the United States, the European Union, Britain and Canada, Zakharova stressed their inhumane nature, as they negatively affect the lives of ordinary Belarusians.
Zakharova stated that these sanctions are characterized by extreme brazenness, because Western countries, with their help, are trying to punish Belarus for the migration crisis, which resulted from the West’s own policy of “exporting democracy” to the countries of the Middle East and North Africa.
The spokeswoman said that this neo-colonial policy resulted mainly in the destabilization of the cultural foundations and the social and economic structure of the countries of the region, which led to a mass exodus of refugees.
Zakharova pointed to the political nature of Western sanctions, and indicated that they are another example of interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state, which aims to strike the foundations of the economy, reducing the people’s standard of living, and thus creating the conditions for the next “color revolution”.
Zakharova noted that Belarus, unlike the hypocritical Western countries, shows the humanitarian attitude towards refugees on its territory.
