The niece of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has been arrested in Iran, months after she participated in an online ceremony praising the widow of the former Shah of Iran.
London-based Iran International TV station quoted her brother, Mahmoud Morad Khani, as saying that security forces arrested Farida Morad Khani, an anti-death penalty activist, last Thursday.
He expressed his concern about his sister, who “has no news” except that she is “in Evin Prison” in Tehran and under the control of the Ministry of Intelligence.
Maradhani is the daughter of Khamenei’s sister Badri, who fell out with her family in the 1980s and fled to Iraq at the height of the war with Iran, to join her husband, the dissident cleric Ali Tehrani.
According to the Hrana news agency, Muradkhani was arrested on her way to her home and then the security forces searched her home and confiscated her personal belongings.
“AFP” indicated that there are no details about the reason for the sudden arrest, but social media users indicated that she finally appeared in October 2021 during a video call in which Muradkhani praises Farah Diba, the widow of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi who was overthrown by the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
She addressed Murad Khani, the widow of the Shah, who was known during the reign of her husband as “Dear Queen” and invited her to return to the country to lead the “renaissance” of Iranian culture.
