Development of an Egyptian application that uses artificial intelligence to diagnose retinopathy


Dr. Amr Talaat, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, followed up on the implementation position of the projects implemented by the Applied Innovation Center, which aim to adopt modern digital technologies in various fields, and find innovative solutions to the challenges facing Egyptian society.

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology established the Applied Innovation Center in April 2020 and aims to develop the application of modern technologies for communications and information technology, which include, but are not limited to, artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, block chain, Internet of things, big data analysis, robotics, fifth generation networks, and others. The center also aims to develop human capital through the participation of young people in applied research projects, while creating the appropriate climate for the growth of emerging companies. The center includes about 55 experts specialized in communications and information technology.

Dr. Amr Talaat met with Dr. Ahmed Tantawy, supervisor of the Center for Applied Innovation, Dr. Noha Adly, Advisor to the Minister of Communications and Information Technology for Research and Development, the executive management and officials of the projects implemented by the center and its employees; Where the youth working in the projects reviewed the results of the work and the most prominent achievements in the projects. Dr. Amr Talaat was also briefed on the applications developed by the center in cooperation with partner agencies.

During the meeting; Dr. Amr Talaat stressed the keenness of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to pay great attention to research and development and to establish global partnerships to build a digital Egypt according to the latest technologies. Pointing to the vital role of the Applied Innovation Center in using the latest communication and information technology technologies to develop innovative applications and solutions that effectively contribute to accelerating the pace of transformation into an integrated digital society and keeping pace with global technological developments, in addition to enriching digital skills and preparing specialized competencies by participating in applied research projects.

The meeting witnessed a review of the executive position of a number of projects implemented by the center, most notably the development of an Egyptian application that uses artificial intelligence in diagnosing diabetic retinopathy with an accuracy of more than 95%. This is based on a field study conducted by the Center in cooperation with the Faculty of Medicine at Alexandria University, in which 10 thousand diabetic patients were examined in several governorates.

The center had started work on the project in April 2020. The center’s work team is currently developing the general plan for the initiative for early detection of diabetic retinopathy for one million citizens. Coordination with the Supreme Council of University Hospitals began immediately after approving the budget for implementing the campaign through university hospitals in 11 universities covering all governorates of the Republic.

The project to identify agricultural lands and types of crops planted using artificial intelligence techniques was also discussed, which is being implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, and aims to analyze satellite images using artificial intelligence techniques to draw the boundaries of the cultivated areas and determine the types of agricultural crops planted with them.

The first phase of the project has ended, as the team built an application to determine the areas, varieties, and condition of agricultural crops in a number of governorates. The next stage will cover the interactive rationalization of irrigation water utilization, early detection of pests and determining the expected productivity of crops.

Dr. Amr Talaat listened to a detailed explanation about the Natural Language Processing project; Where this development research project aims to use artificial intelligence technologies to provide technical solutions capable of understanding the spoken Arabic sentences in the Egyptian colloquial dialect and translating them into sentences spoken in other languages ​​(such as Chinese and English) and vice versa.

Training of the work team on the latest methods used globally in the fields of spoken word recognition and automatic translation between languages ​​has been completed. Work is currently underway to train the multilingual translation system (Multilingual Machine Translation) and develop the Automatic Speech recognition system for spoken Egyptian colloquial speech with its various dialects. Recognition) and Text to Speech Synthesis applications.

Dr. Amr Talaat was briefed on the most prominent achievements that were implemented in the supercomputer project, where the supercomputer qualified to deal with giant applications that requires superior computational ability and a large amount of data was launched.

The computer also includes 48 modern GPU processing units that suit the needs of artificial intelligence applications, especially those that use deep machine learning methods.

The center’s engineers carry out the technical tasks of operating the device and building and developing similar systems suitable for training and conducting experiments.
