The Saudi doctor, Hani Najm, was a guest on the Nas Online program to shed light on the rare surgical operation conducted by a medical team led by him to remove a cancerous tumor from the heart of a fetus in its mother’s womb.
Doctor Najm began his talk by mentioning the details of the operation that had to be performed after diagnosing the presence of a tumor pressing on the fetuss heart, making it impossible to carry out pregnancy until delivery. Dr. Hani, Head of the Department of Adult and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at Cleveland Clinic, added that the operation succeeded in removing the tumor from the fetal heart and then returning the fetus to the uterus to complete the pregnancy, with the help of the fetal surgery team at Cleveland Clinic.
Regarding the duration of the operation, Dr. Hani Negm explained, during his interview with the presenter of the program, Yara Suleiman, that the surgery needed from 5 to 6 hours, and it was necessary to speed up the process so that the fetus would not be affected.
As for his personal fears of this first surgery of its kind inside the womb, the Saudi doctor added that the fears existed, and there was a plan A, B and C, when he was unable to remove the entire tumor, or if it was necessary to remove part of the heart, and what It is followed by urgent medical steps, continuing: “But as a result of my long experience in performing this type of operation, I had confidence that I could remove the tumor.”
