Expert: Tonga volcano was the most violent in the world for more than 900 years

University of Auckland volcanologist Shane Cronin noted that the Honga Hapai volcano, which recently erupted in the Pacific Ocean, was the most violent since 1100.

He indicated in an article he wrote and published on the “Conversation” portal. He pointed out that “according to the conclusions of scientists, volcanic eruptions occur approximately every thousand years, and the last such eruption occurred in 1100 AD, and given this fact, it seems that the eruption that occurred on January 15 deserves to be described as the strongest.”

He added, “Our study of previous eruptions indicates that it is one of the most powerful eruptions that a volcano can produce approximately once every thousand years.”

The Honga-Hapai volcano began erupting at the bottom of the waters of the South Pacific nation of Tonga on January 14, and was followed by a massive tsunami.

In Japan, he announced the danger of a tsunami wave up to three meters high, while evacuations were carried out from the Pacific islands, where more than 100 families were evacuated on the island of American Samoa due to high waves, and countries on the west coast of the United States warned of the possibility of a wave tsunami
