According to the Directorate of Meteorology and Seismic Monitoring in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, this polar snow storm, which has hit all regions of the region since Wednesday, will continue throughout Thursday and its impact will be relatively lessened on Friday, expecting the atmosphere to stabilize next Saturday.

In addition to the mountainous and rural areas that are characterized by their heavy snow precipitation, the snow has fallen heavily in the city centers in the capital of the region, ErbilAnd Sulaymaniyah, Dohuk, Zakho and Halabja, while very cold and frosty weather prevails in the rest of the Iraqi provinces, where the temperature at night reaches several degrees below zero. In a number of towns in the north of the country, it has reached about 20 degrees below zero.

According to many citizens in Iraqi Kurdistan, this wave of snow is unprecedented, as one of them says in an interview with Sky News Arabia: “At least for me, I have never witnessed such intensity of snowfall here in Sulaymaniyah, to the point that just going out to the door of the house It exposes you to various dangers due to the massive accumulation of snow and the formation of frost.”

Iraqi citizen Ibrahim adds: “Despite the harsh cold, stranding and suspension of official and school hours, this snow still has its flavor that makes you feel fully experiencing the winter season, and we do not forget what the specialists say about the benefits of this heavy snow, as it will turn when it melts into abundant groundwater.”

Traffic within and between cities has almost completely stopped in most of the northern governorates, such as Erbil, Dohuk and Sulaymaniyah, and the roads connecting the districts, districts, and their various administrative units are out of service, due to bad weather and the accumulation of snow.

While Sulaymaniyah International Airport announced, on Thursday, the suspension of air traffic to and from it, due to the heavy snow that has been raining down on the city since the dawn hours of Thursday, and it was decided to stop all flights at the airport, revealing that the specialized teams are working to clean the airport and its runways from the accumulated snow, which caused obstruction. air navigation in it.

In light of the general bad weather conditions in Iraq, official and school holidays were announced in many Iraqi governorates, such as Kirkuk, Wasit, Anbar, Diwaniyah, Nineveh and Babil, in addition to the governorates of the Iraqi Kurdish region.
