Officials in the city of Alma-Ata said that the city is witnessing stability, but there are still some armed groups that are fiercely resisting and clashing with the security forces deployed throughout the city to combat terrorism.

“There is stability… Despite that, there are still fierce clashes by the militants who are still resisting,” said Yerzan Babakomarov, the city’s deputy mayor, according to Khabar 24 TV.

In a related context, and in light of the security operation to purge the city of terrorists, the Kazakh Interior Ministry said in a statement today, Sunday, that the number of detainees participating in the riots in Kazakhstan has risen to more than 5.1 thousand people.

“5,135 people were arrested throughout Kazakhstan, and among the detainees were foreigners and nationals from neighboring countries,” the statement said.

He added, “Also, about 300 people were arrested during attempts to illegally cross the borders, and firearms and stolen property including mobile phones and large sums of local and foreign currency were confiscated.”

On the other hand, the Ministry of the Interior pointed out that during the riots in Kazakhstan, 16 were killed and more than 1.3 thousand police, National Guard and military officers were injured.

For his part, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said on Friday that terrorists, including those who arrived from abroad, continue to resist, vowing to liquidate those who did not lay down their arms.

According to the head of state, “foreign personalities” were among the instigators of the riots.

He added that the authorities listened to all the citizens’ demands, which they expressed in peaceful ways.

Since the beginning of January, Kazakhstan has witnessed massive demonstrations accompanied by widespread violence, and initially started from the cities of Zhanauzen and Aktau with protests against the double-double of liquefied gas prices.

Demonstrations subsequently spread to other regions of the country, including Alma-Ata, the largest city in Kazakhstan, and militants made several attempts to storm administrative buildings and police stations, and large-scale bloody armed clashes erupted between security forces and militants, killing dozens of people and wounding thousands, including This is in the ranks of the protesters and the security forces.

Following the protests, the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, announced the dismissal of the government, the presidency of the Security Council, the imposition of a state of emergency nationwide, and an official invitation to the Collective Security Treaty Organization to send peacekeeping forces to the country.

Members of the organization have sent collective peacekeeping forces to Kazakhstan, from Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Belarus and Tajikistan. The tasks of these forces are to protect administrative and diplomatic buildings and help the local army maintain law and order, as the Kazakh security forces are conducting a large-scale anti-terror operation in the country to establish stability and security.
