The decision came after the member associations voted during the FIFA Congress in the Qatari capital, Doha.
The FIFA Congress was held on the sidelines of the 2022 World Cup draw, which will be held on Friday.
The World Cup will be held for the first time in the Middle East, when Qatar will host it at the end of this year.
The tournament is scheduled to take place from November 21 to December 18, 2022.
The World Cup has been held every 4 years since its inception in 1930 and was not played in 1942 and 1946 due to World War II.
The 2022 edition in Qatar will be the last to be held with the participation of 32 teams, and the number of competitors will increase to 48 starting from the 2026 edition hosted by America, Canada and Mexico.
