On Wednesday evening, the Russian Defense Ministry announced a ceasefire starting at 10:00 am Thursday (0700 GMT) in the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol in order to evacuate civilians.

The ministry said that this measure would allow the opening of a humanitarian corridor to the city of Zaporozhye with a stop in the Russian-controlled city of Berdyansk.

“In order for this humanitarian operation to succeed, we propose to implement it with the direct participation of representatives of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Committee of the Red Cross,” she added in a statement.

The Russian ministry also asked Kyiv to ensure “unconditional respect” for the local ceasefire through a written notification sent to the Russian side, UNHCR and the International Committee of the Red Cross before 06:00 Thursday (03:00 GMT).

Moscow also asked the Ukrainian army to commit to ensuring the safety of bus convoys that will pass along the route of this corridor.
